The Lapidarium Museum
is pleased to invite you to the opening of the exhibition
Hanakam& Schuller
New Adventures in Sightseeing
On Saturday 26th July, 2025 at the Museum Lapidarium at 9 p.m.. The artists will be present.
As artists and researchers, Hanakam and Schuller question the rules of the visual arts. In videos and objects, they develop unconventional orders and new concepts of the world. In doing so, they reflect and ironize historical and contemporary artistic strategies and means of expression.

The act of sightseeing, once a pursuit reserved for the elite, has evolved over centuries from a journey of self—discovery and intellectual enrichment to a modern—day cultural exploration. With New Adventures in Sightseeing the artist duo delves into the ever—changing relationship between travel, art, and the human desire to see the world. The mise—en—scènedeveloped site specifically for Muzej Museo Lapidarium features works that span antiquity, the Grand Tour, and Early Middle Ages, while exploring the intersections of contemporary artistic practices such as pneumatic objects and Trompe—l’œil techniques. With their retro—like plastic objects Markus Hanakam and Roswitha Schuller transform the museum’s pavilion into a Science—Fiction—like scenery.

Maybe it is a bit due to our time at the Angewandte (University of Applied Arts Vienna) that we actually like to work on applied objects and artifacts, we think about what things could be, what they could do, what actions and rituals they enable. But also, how functional things work as bodies and surfaces, how different surfaces are made – even as illusions – or how we can imagine them to feel like. In the process, we have been working for over 15 years with an archive of industrially manufactured plastic turned parts, which we use as a kind of modular system both for film, photography and installation work. Or as a blueprint for large—scale objects, which we realize as pneumatic bodies and figures. Hanakam& Schuller, 2025.
